REFRIGERATION

Technology

  • There have been very significant improvements in insulation standards and compressor efficiency.
  • Alternative refrigerants have been developed which have much less impact on the ozone layer and the environment; this technology continues to evolve so eventually only natural refrigerants will be used.
  • Energy efficiency has improved so much that two new efficiency classes have been introduced above A class; A+ and A++.

Cost

Energy efficient models are now available at a similar cost to previous models which were much less efficient; A+ and A++ have a higher initial cost than A but a lower running cost.

Good practice

  • Place appliance away from sources of heat (like cookers or direct sunlight).
  • Ensure there is sufficient space around the back of the appliance so that the heat removed from inside the appliance can be dissipated.
  • Do not put in hot food but wait until it cools.
  • Do not open the door unnecessarily.
  • Defrost appliance at regular intervals to prevent build up of ice (some models do this automatically).
  • Maintain door seals in good condition.
