UNDERSTANDING HOW MUCH ELECTRICITY IS USED IN YOUR HOME

The electricity bill describes the amount of electricity you have used and the cost. The consumption is given in kWh.

On the front page of your bill, you will find the following information:

  • period of time covered by bill
  • number of units used during this period
  • applicable tariff(s) per unit
  • a daily standing or service charge which may be applied
  • any discounts
  • value added tax currently 5%

Whilst the bill layout will differ for each utility, the illustrated example is typical. The following information can be obtained:

  • time period is 75 days
  • consumption is 894 kWh
  • an initial and discounted unit rate and a daily service charge
  • a discount because the bill is paid by direct debit

This gives a daily consumption of 12 units at a cost of 90p. If the water is also heated electrically then the consumption typically rises by 5 units to 17 kWh/day and the daily cost to £1.22.
