ROOM AIR CONDITIONERS

Technology

  • There has been significant improvements in compressor efficiency.
  • Alternative refrigerants have been developed which have much less impact on the ozone layer and the environment; this technology continues to evolve so eventually only natural refrigerants will be used.

Cost

These appliances now carry the EU energy label so it is possible to identify energy efficient models.

The most efficient models are likely to cost more but have a lower running cost.

Good practice

  • The building should be adequately insulated which will help reduce cooling needs in summer and heating needs in winter.
  • Ventilate the building at night when air temperatures are low.
  • Use a timer so that appliance is only used when required.
  • Set the thermostat to a minimum of 20C.
  • Make use of passive shading to reduce the heat load on the building; this may be in the form of internal or external blinds or curtains.
  • Only cool the rooms that are frequently used.
